The American University of Sharjah was founded in 1997 by Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, in the emirate's University City. Built on the American model and accredited in the United States by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 2004, it launched its first graduate degree, an MBA, in 2000.
