The University of Iceland was founded by the Alþingi on 17 June 1911, uniting the country's schools of theology, medicine and law; 45 students enrolled in the first year, and for its first 29 years the university was housed in the Icelandic Parliament building itself. Icelanders saw it as a stepping stone towards full independence, and since 1934 a national lottery has funded its buildings, including the 1940 main building on Suðurgata in central Reykjavík. The country's oldest and largest institution of higher education, it now teaches about 14,000 students across twenty-five faculties.
