King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals was established by Saudi royal decree on 23 September 1963 as the College of Petroleum and Minerals, near the kingdom's earliest oil fields in Dhahran; the first 67 students enrolled a year later, in 1964. Elevated to university status in 1975 as its offerings expanded into science, engineering, technology, business and management, it was renamed after King Fahd in 1986 and grew to over 10,000 students by 2021. Since 2019 it has aligned itself with the kingdom's push to diversify from oil and gas into a knowledge economy.
