Universidad San Francisco de Quito was founded in 1988 by Santiago Gangotena González as the first totally private, self-financed university in Ecuador and the first liberal-arts institution in the Andean region. Its faculty comprises half of all PhD holders in the country, teaching 5,500 students from the main campus in Cumbayá, outside Quito. Its most extraordinary asset is geographic: USFQ is the only university in the world that owns a campus in the Galápagos Islands and another in the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve, the Tiputini Biodiversity Station, in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.
