The West University of Timișoara was created by a decree-law of 30 December 1944 stipulating that a university be established in western Romania; its scattered faculties were united at the end of September 1962 and the institution became an independent university in 1968. The Revolution of 1989 was its turning point, bringing a deep institutional reform aligned with Western European democratic models. Today it comprises 11 faculties, from economics and business administration to arts, law and computer science, and is one of the nine members of the Universitaria Consortium, the group of Romania's elite universities.
