Yonsei University traces its roots to Gwanghyewon, the first modern medical centre in Korea, founded in April 1885 and later the Severance Union Medical College. The university in its current form was established in January 1957 through the union of Severance with Yonhi College — founded as the Chosun Christian College in March 1915 — and its very name splices the first syllables of the two parents, Yon and Sei. A private Christian research university and one of Korea's three prestigious SKY universities, it teaches 18,200 undergraduate and 11,632 graduate students from its main campus in Seoul, in Korean and English.
