The University of Zagreb is the largest Croatian university and one of the oldest continuously operating in Europe: its history began on 23 September 1669, when Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I granted the establishment of the Jesuit Academy of the Royal Free City of Zagreb. The Jesuits ran it until their order was dissolved in 1773, Empress Maria Theresa founded its successor Royal Academy in 1776, and the modern university — championed by Bishop Strossmayer — officially opened on 19 October 1874 as the Royal University of Franz Joseph I. Today it comprises 29 faculties and 3 art academies, with more than 70,000 students.
