Aalto University was established in 2010 by merging three major Finnish institutions — the Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki — a deliberate experiment in bringing science, business and art under one roof to foster innovation; the government approved the project in 2007, after the merger was first proposed in 2005. Named after Alvar Aalto, the great Finnish architect and alumnus who designed much of its Otaniemi campus in Espoo, it comprises six schools with close to 17,000 students and 4,000 staff, making it Finland's second-largest university.
