About Universidad de Chile (FEN)

The University of Chile is the country's oldest university: conceived by minister Manuel Montt in 1841 and given shape by the Venezuelan poet and humanist Andrés Bello, it was created by law on 19 November 1842 and inaugurated the following year, as the continuation of the colonial Royal University of San Felipe of 1738. A public research university whose mission is bound to the development of Chile, it teaches more than 40,000 students across five campuses in Santiago. Its alumni include the Nobel laureates Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral and twenty-one Chilean presidents.
