Chulalongkorn University is the oldest institute of higher education in Thailand: it began in 1899, during King Chulalongkorn's reign, as a school for training royal pages and civil servants at the Grand Palace, and on 26 March 1917 the king's son, Vajiravudh, renamed the Civil Service College a university in his father's honour, with the Rockefeller Foundation instrumental in building its academic foundations. Its nineteen faculties occupy a vast campus in downtown Bangkok, it is the only Thai member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and its graduates customarily receive their diplomas from the King of Thailand — a tradition begun by King Prajadhipok.
