Thammasat University, Thailand's second-oldest, was established on 27 June 1934 by its founder Pridi Banomyong as the University of Moral and Political Sciences — an open university that enrolled 7,094 students of law and politics in its first year. In 1960 it became the first in Thailand to require national entrance examinations, and it has since grown into a university of more than 240 academic programmes in 33 faculties and colleges, with about 39,000 students as of 2024. Its original Tha Phra Chan campus in Bangkok was the site of defining moments in Thai political history, and its alumni include prime ministers, Bank of Thailand governors and leading jurists.
