The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was co-founded in July 1918 by Albert Einstein and Chaim Weizmann — 30 years before the State of Israel itself — and Sigmund Freud and Martin Buber sat on its first board of governors. Israel's second-oldest institution of higher learning, it spans seven faculties, more than 100 research centres and 315 academic departments across campuses in Jerusalem, Rehovot, Rishon LeZion and Eilat; as of 2018 a third of all doctoral candidates in Israel were studying there. Four of Israel's prime ministers are alumni, and 15 Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with the university.
