ISM University of Management and Economics was established in Kaunas in 1999 as the first privately owned institution of management education in Lithuania, founded principally by the BI Norwegian Business School and the Norwegian Industrial and Regional Development Fund. Its predecessor, the Business Training Centre, had been providing executive courses and management training to the emerging Lithuanian business community since 1995, and lives on as the university's training and consulting arm.
