About Vilnius University

Vilnius University, founded in 1579 by Stephen Báthory as the Jesuit Academy of Vilnius, is the first and largest university in Lithuania and one of the oldest in Central and Eastern Europe — the sole university of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Closed after the failed November Uprising, it resumed operations in 1919, and after Lithuania regained independence in 1990 it reclaimed its place as the country's leading research institution. Its fifteen faculties offer more than 200 study programmes to over 24,000 students, its historic ensemble sits in the heart of the capital, and since 2016 it has been a member of the Coimbra Group.
