The University of Latvia was founded on 28 September 1919 as the Higher School of Latvia, on the basis of the former Riga Polytechnic that dated from 1862, with the chemist Paul Walden as its first rector; it took its current name in 1923. Between the wars it was the main centre of higher education, science and culture in the Latvian Republic, and the former Riga Polytechnic building on Raiņa bulvāris 19 still serves as its main building. Institutions that later separated from it — including Riga Technical University and Riga Stradiņš University — became renowned centres in their own right, while LU remains one of the largest and most prestigious universities in the Baltic States.
