Nanyang Technological University was founded in 1981 as the Nanyang Technological Institute, created on the former campus of Nanyang University to answer Singapore's shortage of engineers during its economic restructuring; it was elevated to full university status on 1 July 1991, incorporating the National Institute of Education. Its 200-hectare main campus in the west of Singapore is the largest in the country, and in 2024 the university enrolled 37,458 students across its colleges and schools — among them the Nanyang Business School and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.
