The NYU Stern School of Business was founded in 1900 by Charles Waldo Haskins as the Undergraduate School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance on New York University's Washington Square campus, and is a founding member of the AACSB. It hired its first female faculty member, Jeanette Hamill, as early as 1913. The school took its present name in 1988 in honour of Leonard N. Stern, alumnus and benefactor, and sits on Gould Plaza beside the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences — a fitting neighbour for its quantitative finance teaching. The MS programmes it runs with NYU Shanghai open with a summer term in New York and are then taught at the Shanghai campus, with the degree awarded by New York University.
