Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, officially founded on 19 December 1949, is one of the oldest and largest institutions of higher education in Indonesia — and in the 1940s, under Dutch rule, it was the first to open its medical education to native Indonesians. It takes its name from Gajah Mada, the 14th-century prime minister of the Majapahit Empire regarded by some historians as the nation's first unifier, and even keeps the old Dutch-era spelling. Today it comprises 18 faculties and 24 research centres, with approximately 55,000 students and 2,500 faculty members.
