The University of Indonesia is among the oldest tertiary institutions in the country: its origins date to 2 January 1849, when the Dutch East Indies government founded a school to train medical assistants — whose graduates were titled 'Javanese Doctors' — later succeeded by the STOVIA medical school in 1898 and the RHS law school in 1924, many of whose students became protagonists of Indonesia's independence movement. With campuses in Jakarta and Depok, UI is generally considered one of Indonesia's most prestigious universities, alongside Gadjah Mada and the Bandung Institute of Technology.
