Charles University in Prague is one of the oldest universities in the world in continuous operation and the third-oldest north of the Alps, after Oxford and Cambridge. It was born of Emperor Charles IV's ambition: at his request Pope Clement VI issued the founding bull on 26 January 1347, and in 1348 Charles, as king of Bohemia, granted the university its privileges in a Golden Bull — the year Czech tradition records as its founding. Modelled on the University of Paris with all four faculties including theology, it is today the largest university in the Czech Republic, with 17 faculties located in Prague, Hradec Králové and Plzeň.
