Masaryk University in Brno was founded on 28 January 1919 with four faculties — Law, Medicine, Science and Arts — and is named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of independent Czechoslovakia, who had long championed a second Czech university to give the first real competition; it could only be created after the fall of Austria-Hungary. Closed under the German occupation in 1939, with many professors executed, it was renamed after Jan Evangelista Purkyně in 1960 and regained its original name in 1990, following the Velvet Revolution. Today it is the second-largest university in the Czech Republic, with ten faculties and 35,115 students.
