The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 1963 as a federation of three colleges — Chung Chi, New Asia and United — making it Hong Kong's second-oldest university and still its only collegiate one, now spanning nine colleges and eight faculties in Sha Tin. Operating in both English and Chinese, it inherits traditions from Christian universities of pre-revolutionary China, including St. John's and Yenching. CUHK is the only Hong Kong university on the Nobel organisation's research-affiliations list, through Charles Kuen Kao, the 'father of fibre optics', affiliated there when awarded the 2009 Physics prize.
