The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, founded in 1991, was Hong Kong's third institution to gain university status and the first created from scratch, born of the government's late-1980s push to feed a services economy with graduates. The future King Charles III laid the foundation stone in 1989 on a seaside site at Clear Water Bay originally earmarked for a Gurkha barracks. Its School of Business and Management is one of five schools on the 60-hectare campus, which in 2023-24 enrolled around 10,000 undergraduates and 6,800 postgraduates.
