Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo was founded in 1875 by Arinori Mori as the Institute for Business Training, nurtured by Eiichi Shibusawa, who had studied European banking and economic systems on a Tokugawa scholarship. In 1920 it was granted university status as the Tokyo University of Commerce — Japan's first national institution specialising in commercial studies — and adopted the name Hitotsubashi in 1949; a planned merger into the University of Tokyo had been famously blocked by alumni and students in the 'Shinyu Incident'. Devoted to the social sciences, from commerce and economics to law and sociology, it has produced numerous senior bureaucrats and politicians, including Prime Minister Masayoshi Ōhira.
