Waseda University was founded on 21 October 1882 as the Tōkyō Professional School by Ōkuma Shigenobu, who served twice as prime minister of Japan, and took its present name in 1902. A private research university in Shinjuku, Tokyo, it is organised into 13 undergraduate schools and 23 graduate schools, with 38,776 undergraduate and 8,490 graduate students as of 2023. Its faculty and alumni include eight prime ministers of Japan, founders of companies such as Sony and Uniqlo, and some of the great names of Japanese literature, Haruki Murakami among them.
