About Keio University

Keio University in Tokyo began in 1858 as a school for Western studies founded by the scholar Fukuzawa Yukichi, and took the name Keio Gijuku in 1868, after the era name. Granted university status in 1920 as one of the first private universities in Japan, it had already established its medical school in 1873 and its departments of economics, law and letters in 1890, and began admitting women in 1946. Today it is a member of RU11 and APRU and, alongside the University of Tokyo, one of only two Japanese universities in the World Economic Forum's Global University Leaders Forum.
