The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad was established on 11 December 1961 with the support of the Government of India, the state of Gujarat, Harvard Business School and Indian industry — the physicist Vikram Sarabhai and the businessman Kasturbhai Lalbhai, both sons of Ahmedabad, drove its creation, with Ravi J. Matthai as founding director and Kamla Chowdhary as its first faculty member. Regarded as India's best business school and often called the Harvard of India, it was accorded Institute of National Importance status in 2017. It offers master's programmes in management and agri-business management, a fellowship programme and executive training.
