The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was the first of the IIMs, established in November 1961 in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management, the government of West Bengal, the Ford Foundation and Indian industry, after the Planning Commission — struggling in 1959 to find managers for India's new public enterprises — called in Professor George Robbins of the University of California; the Nobel economist Paul Samuelson was part of its early core team. Recognised as an Institute of National Importance in 2017, it moved to its Joka campus in Kolkata in 1975, was the first of only four triple-accredited business schools in India, and is the country's only member of the CEMS Global Alliance.
