The Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) is a private university in Mexico City and one of Mexico's most important institutions of higher learning, especially prestigious in the social sciences. Born as an economics school, it added its undergraduate business school a year later and grew from 52 students in 1947 to 500 by 1951. Recognised by government decree as a 'Free University School' in 1963, when it added 'autonomous' to its name, it built out programmes from applied mathematics (1974) and an MBA (1974) to law (1980), actuarial science (1982) and international relations (1992). It supplies the highest share of admissions to the Mexican Foreign Service.
