About UNAM

The National Autonomous University of Mexico was founded in its modern form on 22 September 1910 by Justo Sierra as a secular alternative to the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico — the first Western-style university in North America, founded in 1551. With more than 324,413 students it is one of the largest universities in the world; part of its Ciudad Universitaria campus, designed and decorated by some of Mexico's best-known architects and painters, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and hosted the main events of the 1968 Olympics. All Mexican Nobel laureates have been UNAM alumni, and more than 25% of Mexico's scientific papers come from its researchers.
