Lund University, officially founded in 1666 on the site of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral, is one of Northern Europe's oldest universities. Today it teaches around 46,000 students across nine faculties in Lund, Malmö and Helsingborg, maintains 560 partner universities in some 70 countries, and belongs to the League of European Research Universities and Universitas 21. Its associates include five Nobel laureates and a Fields Medalist, and its scientific weight keeps growing: the MAX IV synchrotron laboratory opened in 2016, and the European Spallation Source is being completed alongside it.
