About Stockholm School of Economics

The Stockholm School of Economics was formally founded in 1909 on private initiative, the fruit of a campaign begun in 1903 when the banker Knut Agathon Wallenberg donated 100,000 kronor to lobby for a business school that would 'raise the social status of the merchant class'. Its founding members — 109 merchants, 47 bank directors, mill owners and engineers, with the Wallenberg and Söderberg families to the fore — built a private school on the German Handelshochschule model. From Vasastan in central Stockholm it teaches BSc, MSc, MBA, PhD and executive programmes, belongs to CEMS, and founded sister schools in Riga and Russia along with a research institute in Tokyo.
