About Uppsala University

Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is the oldest university in Sweden and the Nordic countries. It rose to significance as Sweden became a great power, gaining financial stability through a large donation from King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century, and it holds a singular place in Swedish culture: the white student cap and much of Swedish academic tradition originated here, along with the student nation system it shares with Lund and Helsinki. A member of the Coimbra Group and the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, it teaches across nine faculties, with approximately 52,000 registered students and 2,200 PhD students as of 2020, in a historic centre still dominated by the university's presence around the cathedral.
