Tallinn University of Technology — TalTech — was born of a young country's need for its own engineers: until then, Estonians had trained in St. Petersburg, Germany or Riga, so on 17 September 1918 the Estonian Engineering Society opened the Special Engineering Courses, the recognised founding date of the university. Granted university status in 1936 and named Tallinn Technical University in 1938, it is the only technical university in Estonia, teaching engineering, business, public administration and maritime affairs in the capital, with colleges in Tartu and Kohtla-Järve; an agreement to merge the Estonian Maritime Academy into the university was signed in 2014.
