About University of Tartu

The University of Tartu, founded in 1632 by Gustavus Adolphus, then king of Sweden, is the national university of Estonia and the country's largest and oldest. Its historical buildings carry the European Heritage Label as an embodiment of the ideas of a university in the Age of Enlightenment. Today 15,573 students study there, 1,435 of them international; most teaching is in Estonian, alongside 30 English-taught programmes, 27 of them at master's level. A member of the Coimbra Group and the Utrecht Network, it even has a mascot: a blue bird called Tiksu.
