The University of Agder, with campuses in Kristiansand and Grimstad in southern Norway, has an idea behind it dating to 1771, when Bishop Gunnerus proposed placing Norway's first university in Kristiansand — the honour went to Christiania instead, and the region built colleges of its own, starting with a teacher training college in 1839 that ranks among Norway's oldest institutions of higher education. Six of those regional colleges merged into a university college in 1994, which was granted full university status on 1 September 2007.
