The University of Oslo was established in 1811 as the Royal Frederick University, the de facto Norwegian continuation of Denmark–Norway's common university in Copenhagen, and took its current name in 1939. The oldest university in Norway — and the only one until Bergen was founded in 1946 — it teaches approximately 27,700 students with around 6,000 employees, from its original neoclassical campus in the centre of Oslo, now home to the Faculty of Law, to the newer Blindern campus. The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in its Atrium from 1947 to 1989 and again in 2020, and since 2003 the Abel Prize for mathematics has been presented there; five researchers affiliated with the university have been Nobel laureates and three have won the Turing Award.
