About Bilkent University

Bilkent University in Ankara — its name an abbreviation of bilim kenti, 'city of science' in Turkish — was the first non-profit private university established in Turkey. It was founded in 1984 by İhsan Doğramacı, the first president of the Council of Higher Education, who had been shaped by his years at Harvard and the University of Washington and had already helped build Hacettepe University; private universities became possible only after constitutional amendments that followed 1980. Bilkent admitted its first students in 1986 and has ranked among the top Turkish universities ever since.
