About Boğaziçi University

Boğaziçi University is a public research university on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, heir to Robert College — the first American college founded outside the United States, established in Bebek in 1863 by the philanthropist Christopher Robert and the missionary Cyrus Hamlin. From its 1878–79 catalogue the college promised education 'without distinction of race or religion', and in 1923 it adopted a fully secular model in step with the new Turkish republic. In 1971 Robert College's university section and its Bebek campus were turned over to the Republic of Turkey, becoming Boğaziçi University — since grown from a liberal-arts college into one of Turkey's leading research universities, teaching in English.
