The University of Graz, founded on 1 January 1585, is the second-oldest university in Austria and the largest public research university in Styria. Its former name, Karl-Franzens-Universität, honours the two rulers who shaped it: Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria, its founder, and Emperor Francis I of Austria. In 2004 its Faculty of Medicine was spun off to become the Medical University of Graz.
