About Universität Innsbruck

The University of Innsbruck grew out of a Jesuit grammar school established in 1562 by Peter Canisius and financed by the salt mines of Hall in Tirol; it was chartered as a university with four faculties on 15 October 1669 by Leopold I. Reduced to a lyceum in 1782, it was re-established in 1826 by Emperor Franz I — hence its official name honouring both founders, Leopold-Franzens-Universität. It is the largest education facility in Tyrol and the third-largest university in Austria, with significant contributions across many fields, above all in physics.
