The Jagiellonian University in Kraków, founded in 1364 by King Casimir III the Great, is the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest in continuous operation in the world; its grounds form part of the Kraków Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Long viewed as a vanguard of Polish culture, it educated Nicolaus Copernicus — whose De revolutionibus is held in its library — as well as Pope John Paul II, and four Nobel laureates in literature are affiliated with it, including Wisława Szymborska and Czesław Miłosz. Today roughly 4,000 academics teach more than 35,000 students in 166 fields, with around 30 degrees offered in English.
