The Technical University of Denmark was founded in 1829 as the country's first polytechnic, at the initiative of the physicist Hans Christian Ørsted — inspired by the École Polytechnique he had visited in Paris — who served as its principal until his death in 1851. Today DTU ranks among Europe's leading engineering institutions, based in Kongens Lyngby, 12 km north of Copenhagen, and stands alongside École Polytechnique, EPFL, TU Munich and the Technion as a member of the EuroTech Universities Alliance.
