The Autonomous University of Madrid — la Autónoma — was founded by royal decree in 1968, in the restructuring of the Spanish university system that also created the autonomous universities of Barcelona and Bilbao. Its main campus, Cantoblanco, spreads over a rural tract of 650 acres some 15 km north of Madrid. Its alumni include every president the Spanish Supreme Court and Constitutional Court have had, as well as King Felipe VI, who studied Law there and presides over the university's alumni society. UAM offers 94 doctorate programmes and 88 master's degrees.
