The Complutense University of Madrid is one of the oldest operating universities in the world: founded in Alcalá in 1293 by royal charter of Sancho IV of Castile, expanded into a full university by papal bull in 1499 thanks to Cardinal Cisneros — who built for it the first purpose-built university campus in history — and relocated to Madrid in 1836. By Royal Decree of 1857 it became the only institution authorised to grant doctorates throughout the Spanish Empire, earning the title of 'la Docta', and in 1909 it was among the first universities in the world to grant a doctorate to a woman. With over 86,000 students it is the eighth-largest non-distance university in Europe, and both the prime minister's residence and the Constitutional Court stand on its campus.
