About Birkbeck, University of London

Birkbeck, University of London was established in 1823 as the London Mechanics' Institute, founded by Joseph Clinton Robertson with the backing of George Birkbeck, Jeremy Bentham and Henry Brougham — born to educate working Londoners. Two centuries later it remains one of the few universities in Britain specialising in evening higher education, letting students earn degrees while they work. Based in Bloomsbury with five faculties and over 200 programmes, it counts five Nobel laureates and a British prime minister among its people, and its brain research centre won the Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2005.
