The London School of Economics and Political Science was founded in 1895 by Fabian Society members Sidney and Beatrice Webb, Graham Wallas and George Bernard Shaw, and specialises in the pure and applied social sciences. It joined the University of London in 1900, and the degrees it launched in 1901 were the first university degrees dedicated to the social sciences; since 2008 it has awarded degrees in its own name. Its campus sits in central London near Holborn, in the area historically known as Clare Market. A member of the Russell Group and of London's 'golden triangle' of research universities, LSE counts over 40 world leaders and 21 Nobel laureates among those who have studied or taught there.
