Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, is the only university in Canada located in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, at the centre of the Niagara Peninsula on the Niagara Escarpment. It bears the name of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, who defended Upper Canada during the War of 1812, and its founders invited James A. Gibson to become founding president in 1963.
