Cardiff University was established in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire and was a founding college of the University of Wales in 1893. After merging with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology in 1988, it adopted the Cardiff University name in 1999, becoming a fully independent, degree-awarding university in 2005. It is the only Welsh member of the Russell Group; its academics and alumni include four heads of state or government and two Nobel laureates, and its faculty counts seventeen fellows of the Royal Society.
