Comillas Pontifical University began as a seminary founded by Pope Leo XIII in 1890 in the Cantabrian town of Comillas and entrusted to the Society of Jesus; Pius X raised it to Pontifical university in 1904, and it moved to Madrid in 1969. In 1978 the Jesuits folded in their Madrid institution ICAI-ICADE — itself the 1960 merger of two institutes founded in 1908 and 1956 — which lives on as the ICAI School of Engineering and the ICADE schools of Law and of Business and Economics. The university maintains exchanges and projects with over 200 institutions across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
